Luke 19:1-10

When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.

Spiritual Practice of Living a Healthy Lifestyle: Hospitality

Zacchaeus must have been mighty surprised to be asked to host Jesus in his home. The role of host affirms that what you can offer and who you are have value. As a tax collector, Zacchaeus knew how despised he was in his community. Why in the world would the Lord invite himself to be a guest in Zacchaeus’ home? Why would someone rich in spirit (or resources) bother to accept hospitality from someone who isn’t?

Healthy Christian hospitality calls us not just to serve others, but to humble ourselves enough to allow others the opportunity to serve. It allows everyone to be affirmed in the community by acknowledging the value of what each one has to offer. It allows everyone the equal honor of being served and of serving. Our Lord and Savior made it clear, by inviting and accepting the hospitality of a community outcast, that Zacchaeus had value in his eyes. Being allowed to serve changed Zacchaeus’ life.

Prayer

Lord, please help us to honor You by remembering that everyone has value and everyone has something to offer. Help us practice healthy hospitality that gives everyone the opportunity to serve.

Lenten Action for the Day

Seek ways to allow someone to feel honored by the opportunity to offer their gifts.
