Rev. Sandra Florentino-Hutchins
Proverbs 25:28
"A person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out."
Eyesores
Abandoned buildings have problems that have been neglected. However, if the problems had been addressed earlier, they would not cause decay in the community. In essence, they are called eyesores, meaning an unpleasant sight.
Think about it - a house with no doors and windows that has not been boarded up gives you a view of the core of the building. Consider this for a moment: Based on the scripture, persons without self-control - like these abandoned buildings with no doors or windows – present, at their core, an unpleasant view. The house is there, visible to the naked eye, but at the core or very nature is a person out of control. And like abandoned buildings, lack of self-control produces an unpleasant sight.
How do we restore our abandoned building and present a more pleasant view? What is God’s will for us in order to keep us from self-destruction? We can start by putting God first in our lives. When God is in control, then we do what is right. We think before we speak. We ignore wrongs. We make the most of every God-given opportunity. We become good stewards over all creation. We take care of our health. We treat others with dignity, honor, and respect. Let’s not demolish the buildings that God created. Let’s allow God’s will to be our self-control. Let’s present a more pleasant view from the inside out.
Prayer
Lord, you created the building from within,
and all You ask is that we give in.
Lord, the view is not pleasant when we are in control,
but it is when You are in possession of our soul.
Lord, help us to create a better view -
a much better house, because we depend on You!
Thought for the day
Imagine the view that you present before God. Is it a pleasant view?... Or an eyesore?
