Acts 9:36-43 (NLT)

A Faith Based Community

Having faith enough to expect the impossible is an awesome power to possess. What is faith? Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). In order for us to practice faith, we must expect to receive what has not yet appeared. Believing that God can make a difference in our situations is faith in motion. We need faith that can move mountains; we need faith that causes our seasons to change; we need faith that can conquer anything!

Much like the latter portion of Acts 9; the believers and widows received word that Tabitha (which is Dorcas in Greek), the community activist of Joppa, had fallen ill and died. While preparing her body for burial the widows and believers heard that Peter was in town. Because Dorcas was so well loved, two-male-messengers were sent federal express to locate Peter and to beg him to come and assess their situation of her death immediately. The believers had faith that God would use Peter to make a difference in their time of trouble. I imagine upon Peter’s arrival, he could feel the love and appreciation for Dorcas as the widows displayed the garments and coats that she made for them; therefore he wanted to help. After asking the widows and believers to leave the room where Dorcas’ body lay, Peter knelt and prayed. Practicing his power of faith, Peter turned and called out to Dorcas by her birth name of Tabitha. Immediately she awakened and when she saw Peter she sat up! Peter presented her to the widows and believers alive. After this miracle was performed many believed in the Lord.

Prayer

Gracious God, thank You for the courage to have faith. Thank You for the ability and strength to exercise faith. And keep us ever mindful that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Amen.

Thought for the Day
