And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. Messages from Haggai (Part One): Finish Your Assignment A mother called my office seeking counseling for her adolescent son. She shared with me that she had tried a few therapists and her son rejected all of them. However, she was determined to find a good fit for her son. She explained that after the first session she would let me know if we could work together. During the first two sessions, I asked social development questions to which I got short answers that were followed up with “whatever, I don’t care”. I passed the litmus test and we were on the third session when I asked the son to tell me about his love for writing. His words flowed like a river as he spoke of his love for writing, how it was developed and what it meant to him. Intermingled into his story were comments about his childhood experiences, his relationship with his parents, the pain of their divorce and the social isolation that he had been experiencing. I have a Master’s degree in Social Work and fifteen years of mental health experience. I have worked with children and families for the past 8 years. During that third session, a memorable reality was impressed upon me. I was reminded that the importance of my degree and/or experiences will always be trumped by my ability to communicate how much I care. Prayer Dear Lord, please help me to remember from whom all blessings flow. Keep me humble and help me to never forget that you are my source. Please help me to always convey to people a genuine concern for their condition. Please help me to always remember to return to the source for replenishing. Thank you Lord, you are my source and my strength. Amen Thought for the day People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care… about them. |
